Chemical Peels
With many different uses, chemical peels are commonly used to treat acne and provide a smoother, clearer complexion for patients bothered by the appearance of pimples and other blemishes. These treatments are often recommended after over-the-counter products or prescription medications such as Accutane have been unsuccessful in relieving redness and overall skin clarity.
How does it work?
Chemical peels treat acne by exfoliating the skin, and getting rid of the dead skin cells that often clog pores to cause pimples. Peels also control oil production and prevent the buildup in the hair follicles that is often linked to acne.
A chemical peel involves an alpha or beta hyrodxy acid solution that is applied to the face. Glycolic acid is most commonly used in light alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels, while beta hydroxy acid (BHA) peels may contain salicylic acid.
What happens during a chemical peel?
During a chemical peel treatment, the skin will be thoroughly cleansed and dried before the peel solution is applied to the face. Patients may experience a slight stinging sensation when the peel is applied, but this is usually tolerable. The peel is usually left on for about ten minutes, before being removed with cool water and a neutralizing agent. A peel is often combined with a mask treatment or facial massage for optimal results.
What are the results of this procedure?
Most patients will notice improvements in the appearance of their skin after just one session, although optimal results are achieved after a series of treatments spaced one to two weeks apart.
After a chemical peel, the skin will usually appear as though it’s sunburned, which may take a few hours or a few days to subside, depending on the strength of the peel. Patients can apply makeup to conceal any redness and may return to work and other regular activities as soon as they feel comfortable. Some patients may also experience peeling or flaking of the skin, but these symptoms are usually mild.
