Acne is the term for the blocked pores (blackheads and whiteheads), pimples, and deeper lumps (cysts or nodules) that can appear typically on the face, neck, chest, back, shoulders and upper arms. Seventeen million Americans currently have acne, making it the most common skin disease in the country. While it affects mostly teenagers, and almost all teenagers have some form of acne, adults of any age can have it. Acne is not life-threatening, but it can cause physical disfigurement (scarring) and emotional distress.
Isolaz™ is an advanced laser produce used for several different applications, including the treatment of acne, to help patients achieve clear, smooth skin through a simple and painless procedure. Treatment with the Isolaz laser is FDA-approved for the treatment of acne and is an effective alternative to over-the-counter cleansers, antibiotics and Accutane for patients who have not found successful results or do not want to deal with the side effects of other treatments.
Isolaz laser treatment combines laser and vacuum technology for a unique, painless and effective procedure. The vacuum helps extract dirt, blackheads and oil from the pores, while the laser destroys acne-causing bacteria and evens out skin tone, producing clear skin that looks and feels healthier.
This is the first treatment proven to treat pustular and comedonal acne, as well as mild to moderate cases of other acne. While results cannot be 100% guaranteed, most patients notice significant improvements to their skin after treatment with Isolaz.
The Isolaz procedure is performed in the office and usually takes just 10 to 20 minutes, depending on the size and location of the area being treated. No anesthesia is needed for this procedure, and most patients report little to no pain. Most patients require four treatment sessions in order to achieve noticeable results.
The results of the Isolaz procedure are visible within 24 to 48 hours, as patients may notice reduced redness and discoloration, and an immediate drying out of any blemishes. You can return to work and other regular activities immediately after treatment, as long as you feel comfortable enough to do so.
Most patients are satisfied with the results of the Isolaz procedure and notice significant improvement to the appearance of their acne and overall skin.
The Isolaz treatment is safe for all skin types, and is not associated with any major risks. Dr. Welsh will decide if this treatment is right for you after performing a thorough evaluation of your condition. With many different uses, chemical peels are commonly used to treat acne and provide a smoother, clearer complexion for patients bothered by the appearance of pimples and other blemishes. These treatments are often recommended after over-the-counter products or prescription medications such as Accutane have been unsuccessful in relieving redness and overall skin clarity.
Chemical peels treat acne by exfoliating the skin, and getting rid of the dead skin cells that often clog pores to cause pimples. Peels also control oil production and prevent the buildup in the hair follicles that is often linked to acne.
A chemical peel involves an alpha or beta hyrodxy acid solution that is applied to the face. Glycolic acid is most commonly used in light alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) peels, while beta hydroxy acid (BHA) peels may contain salicylic acid.
During a chemical peel treatment, the skin will be thoroughly cleansed and dried before the peel solution is applied to the face. Patients may experience a slight stinging sensation when the peel is applied, but this is usually tolerable. The peel is usually left on for about ten minutes, before being removed with cool water and a neutralizing agent. A peel is often combined with a mask treatment or facial massage for optimal results.
Most patients will notice improvements in the appearance of their skin after just one session, although optimal results are achieved after a series of treatments spaced one to two weeks apart.
After a chemical peel, the skin will usually appear as though it’s sunburned, which may take a few hours or a few days to subside, depending on the strength of the peel. Patients can apply makeup to conceal any redness and may return to work and other regular activities as soon as they feel comfortable. Some patients may also experience peeling or flaking of the skin, but these symptoms are usually mild.
Chemical peels are considered safe for most patients with no major side effects. Patients can enhance the results of a chemical peel by using acne medications recommended Dr. Welsh.
