Because Restylane® is a hyaluronic acid-based filler, it instantly smooths away any wrinkles it targets. Hyaluronic acid occurs naturally in your own body: Its purpose is to keep tissues soft and supple. When used as an injectable filler, hyaluronic acid fills in volume beneath wrinkles to smooth them away. Over time, it’s naturally and harmlessly broken down by the body. Restylane® is similar to other hyaluronic acid fillers, such as JUVÉDERM®.
Restylane® can be used throughout the face, but its most common indications are to treat the following:

The side effects of Restylane are almost always temporary and mild. These include swelling, tenderness, soreness, bruising, or redness. Side effects may last a bit longer if you’ve had Restylane® injected into your lips. Swelling is also more likely in patients under 35, while bruising is more common in older patients.
Restylane® doesn’t require any downtime. After your appointment, you can return to your regular activities immediately while enjoying your new results.

In use for more than a decade, Restylane® is one of the most extensively studied dermal fillers available. While Restylane® does have some side effects associated with it, the most commonly reported are mild and temporary.
People who should not have Restylane® include those who are allergic to lidocaine. If you’ve ever had a severe allergic reaction to any kind of medication, be sure to tell your doctor before your injections. Restylane® is also not a good match for patients under 18, or patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.
At Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology, we recommend avoiding blood-thinning drugs, including aspirin, for at least 24 hours prior to your appointment. This reduces the risk of excessive bleeding and bruising.
