Efudex (florouracil) is an anti-metabolite medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat cancerous or pre-cancerous lesions and spots on the skin. Efudex is a prescription topical cream that is applied to the affected area and can be used as an effective alternative to chemotherapy drugs because of its ease of use and accessibility. When applied, the cream interferes with the metabolic and cell regeneration process of cancerous or pre-cancerous cells, interrupting their reproduction rate and attempting to eliminate the mutated cells. Efudex can effectively stop the cell reproduction and halt the cancer from spreading, treating a number of different conditions, such as actinic keratosis and basal cell cancer of the skin. The board-certified dermatologists and skin care professionals at Bay Area Cosmetic Dermatology can help San Francisco area patients diagnose and treat skin conditions like actinic keratosis and basal cell carcinoma with prescription Efudex.
"I have been seeing Dr. Welsh (who was initially recommended to me by my primary care physician) since 2007 for fillers, and more recently, Botox, between once and twice a year. Additionally, two years ago I had an intensive peel and spots on the backs of my hands treated, and last year, a light peel. Although it seems counter-intuitive, I am now paying less per visit than I did ten years ago; I don't need as much! I also am not trying to look decades younger, only slow the external manifestations of aging. This goal is exactly what Dr. Welsh continues to achieve. The work is subtle, yet I am always met with disbelief when I tell people I am fifty-eight. (I should add that I have been using Retin-A since I was thirty, and Dr. Welsh says this makes a huge difference.)Since Dr. Hui has come on board I have seen her once for fillers, with the same excellent results. I wanted to get another intensive peel this year, which Dr. Hui administered eight days ago. The product Dr. Hui currently uses has a much quicker turn-around than the previous two-week period. The treatment is, as Dr. Hui characterized it, "spicy." But the three chili peppers level lasts only for a minute, and my face felt completely normal an hour later. I've been slathering my face with Aquafor (and sunscreen when I am outside) and the peeling has ended. I was a bit concerned as my face peeled much more rapidly than with the previous treatment, but when I saw Dr. Hui for a check-in yesterday she reassured me that this was normal for the new product. I currently have patches of redness in varying size and shade over about a third of my face that will fade over the next three to four days. The skin is beautiful, and I won't feel the need to wear make-up. I am very pleased with the results--at a much lower cost than Fraxel laser treatments.Drs. Welsh and Hui have stellar educations and credentials, yet are down-to-earth. They love their work and it shows. Over ten years I have had only warm, professional interactions with staff, and never once felt pressure to buy products. I have watched my skin and appearance improve under Dr. Welsh's thoughtful care, and am happy that the equally attentive Dr. Hui has joined her. I am looking forward to the next ten years!"- H.A. / Yelp / Aug 08, 2017

"This review is about Dr Hui- the only person I trust with my face. She is kind and generous with her time, and has an eye for detail. She patiently listened to all my concerns before the procedure and I always leave her office not just looking my best but feeling my best too! Thank you Dr Hui. Cheers, Hillel-"- H.S. / Yelp / Oct 20, 2017
"Dr Hui is not only an amazing dermatologist but an amazing person as well! I trust her completely and know I'm in good hands whether she's helping me clear up some eczema or filling my lips!"- K.K. / Yelp / Oct 19, 2017
"For more than a decade, I've been suffering severe acne and its scarring. I tried multiple over-the-counter medication and department-store skincare, but none of them are working. Finally, end of 2016, I decided to ask for professional help. I carefully searched ALL dermatologists across Bay Area. I've read customer reviews and looked for recommendations. Finally, I decided to choose Dr. Hui, based on positive reviews, current skin-technology, and personalized treatments-tailored to patients' skin. If I have to summarize it in a sentence: I am VERY GLAD choosing Dr. Hui and her staff. 9 months after seeing her, my skin is clearer, brighter and smoother. I usually shy away from group pictures or wefie (I am barely do selfie), but lately I am happy with my friends' wefie pictures- my skin looks much better. My friends start complementing my skin, and of course my confidence is up. If I can leave few tips, here they are: 1) Skincare takes time. Wrt to skin, it is not instant. It is like going to gym or diet, it takes time to gain muscle/lose weight. Of course, we can go to extreme gym activities or diet, the result might be instant, but the full circle might come sooner too. 2). Be honest and bring your expectation with dermatologist (in this case, Dr. Hui). She will work with you and for you. That includes fees, timeline, expected/unexpected results, upcoming work/personal trips, etc. 3). Be patience & follow Dr Hui's instructions and suggestions. If I haven't follow them, and fast-forward it to the following 3 months treatment, most likely my skin would not great and get worse."- E.L. / Yelp / Oct 11, 2017
Efudex is most commonly used to treat two skin conditions:
- Actinic Keratosis: actinic keratosis is a patch of scaly skin that forms commonly on the face, hands, arms, and head due to overexposure of ultra violet (UV) rays. This condition usually takes years to develop and can be diagnosed by examining the abnormal patch of skin. Actinic keratosis does not necessarily equate with cancer, however it can lead to skin cancer over time if it is not properly treated or prevented. Efudex is used to treat actinic keratosis and can be a successful cancer prevention method. It is important to consult with one of our dermatologists to determine if this method might be right for you.
- Basal Cell Carcinoma: basal cell carcinoma is a type of skin cancer that is formed by excessive exposure to the sun and artificial UV lights. The cancerous region appears as a transparent legion on the skin, typically in regions that receive the most sun exposure, like the face and neck. This kind of carcinoma begins in the basal cells, the type of cells within the skin that are responsible for the reproduction process of new cells. When cancerous cells invade, Efudex can be effective in interrupting this regeneration process, potentially leading to the destruction of the cancerous cells. Our skilled dermatologists are highly-equipped to assess your needs and help decide if this is the proper treatment method for you.
What to Expect
Patients may apply Efudex/fluorouracil cream themselves, directly on the legion or cancerous area of the skin. Depending on the severity of the condition, Efudex may be applied regularly or periodically over different periods of time. The cream should be applied using fingertips (metal applicators should be avoided) and hands should be washed after coming into contact with the cream. One of our skilled dermatologist will determine the patient's dosage and treatment schedule depending on their condition and the level of skin damage. After the patient has applied the cream for the prescribed amount of time, one of our dermatologists will determine if the cream may be discontinued via emailed photo of the treatment area or in person office visit.
The most common reactions to Efudex treatment include: itching, irritation, burning, swelling, or other discomfort around the treated area. Treated lesions may become red, blister, and/or scab. Not to worry, however, this is a normal side effect and a sign that the treatment is working to destroy precancerous and cancerous cells. Usually, these symptoms will subside and heal after the entire treatment process is complete. Patients should avoid taking aspirin while using Efudex and it should not be used on women who are or may become pregnant to avoid serious complications. Before using Efudex please talk to your doctor about any current medications and review your medical history. Patients should report any side effects or concerns while using Efudex.
