New Study Confirms That Mites Have a Role In Rosacea

A new study funded by the National Rosacea Society (NRS) confirms that mites may cause or at least exacerbate Rosacea. Yes, we all have mites on our face. This is not new information to researchers, but, if you’re not a Rosacea researcher or dermatologist, you are probably surprised and a little disgusted to learn that microscopic mites called Demodex folliculorum are normal inhabitants in human skin and survive on facial oil, known as sebum. Demodex are found in greater numbers on the skin of people that have Rosacea. However, until recently scientists were unsure of the connection between Rosacea and Demodex.

Microscopic View of Demodex Mite

In a new study published in the British Journal of Dermatology, researchers isolated a distinct strain of bacteria from the Demodex mite that stimulated an immune response in subjects with Rosacea. “The immune response results in inflammation, as evident in the papules (bumps) and pustules (pimples) of subtype 2 rosacea,” Dr. Powell said. “This suggests that these bacteria found in the mites could be responsible for the inflammation associated with the condition.” This study therefore supports the use of antibiotics as a treatment for Rosacea.

Rosacea is commonly treated with prescription antibiotics and/or sulfur solutions. However, Dr. Welsh also recommends at home products such as the Clarisonic Cleansing Brush to help treat Rosacea. The Clarisonic Cleansing brush breaks up oil in the pore and on the skin’s surface disrupting, thereby removing the Demodex mite’s oil supply.
